Energy and Command
Sidelined by a career ending injury in his teens, Joseph was asked to become head coach of the junior varsity football squad of his high school. Moving from starting linebacker to coach was a startling proposition. A first for the school and for the senior coaching staff. Youth and adrenaline helped with his transition but it wasn’t until he was able to watch the varsity coaches coaching, I mean really watching, that his worldview changed. And what a change.
Coaching and sports go together hand in glove. In the US, the major sports are serious concerns for the entire active life of an athlete. In Canada, of course, the major sport is hockey. In the rest of the world, football or as those of us in the US and Canada call it, soccer is the go-to sport. All of these are team sports. No one is born to be on a team but most of us seek the social, physical and emotional benefits of being a team member. No one is born to be a leader but many of us want to be that go-to person. The person others look to when the score is down for the home team for energy and command of the game. “Energy and command:” not ‘winning and losing’ or ‘leading and following.’ Energy and command, they get the job done*!
Where can we find the necessary energy and command? Some using a natural charisma and an openness to learning. Some without charisma but offering an extraordinary level of intelligent empathy. Others with love. Love? That’s right, love. Let’s dissect. Energy is easily defined but hard to gather in tough usually human moments. Command is borne of respect, trust and experience. While many of us either scramble to get our team members to respect and trust us, others offer their experience as a means to getting their own carte blanche and still others will always chase a buck (name your currency). Energy and command come from a mindset, like the worldview that Joseph found as a young man.
Joseph has turned that worldview and his thirty years of experience helping leaders to find the mindset, people and tools they need to get the job done.
His credibility comes from the empathy and experience he offers his coaching and other clients. His reputation comes from being able to create the energy and command that the Founders, CEOs and leadership team members to solve their own problems whether they are of the in-your-face variety or for those aiming for the longer term.
